Sydney beaches closed after whale carcass washes up

Briefing by News4U · First published

Coogee and Maroubra beaches closed after a whale carcass washed up between them; removal plans ongoing.

The Guardian reports that Coogee and Maroubra beaches in Sydney have been closed after a whale carcass washed up on the rocks between the two beaches. [1]

Randwick council is working with rangers and the NSW Department of Primary Industries on a culturally respectful removal with the Gamay Rangers; the whale is a totem animal to the local Bidjigal people. [1]

The carcass is relatively small, deteriorated and stuck in a crevice; authorities are still determining the species. [1]
